All of your weddings thank you card questions answered
We've collected all the common questions couples have when it comes to thank you cards, so you don't have to worry. Let's get started.
What is the etiquette for wedding thank you cards?
Generally speaking, most couples aim to thank guests for their attendance, well-wishes, gifts, and assistance they offered on the big day.
Thank you cards are simply a must-have! Even in 2018, they are still considered to be a key piece of wedding etiquette. Thank you cards typically have a generic message printed on the front, while personalized notes are added by the couple for each guest or household.
Who should you thank after your wedding?
It’s a good practice to thank everyone who attended your wedding, whether they contributed towards a gift or not. One tip to make life easier is to keep track of how people helped you along the way. This way, when you’re back from your honeymoon, you can personalize your thank you cards accordingly for anyone who went the extra mile.
We recommend starting a Google sheet, or even a Notion list, with just two columns - who helped you and what they did. This list will prove to be priceless when it comes to writing your thank you cards.
How do you write a thank you card?
We follow these 5 simple rules from For the love of stationary's article, "5 Wording Ideas for Your Wedding Thank You Cards".
- Keep it short and sweet
- Bring them back to the wedding - was there a funny moment? Or something that didn't quite go to plan that you can share a laugh with?
- Make them feel special
- Show the love. It's the time to get mushy (but not cringy)
- Never too late - It'll be a lovely surprise for them to receive a thank you card to remember the wonderful wedding day.
How do you send a thank you card?
If you want to send physical thank you cards, we recommend a service called Paperlust. Not only are their designs stunning, but they also offer worldwide shipping for free if you spend $300 or more.
For those of you who have your honeymoon registry with Hitchd, you'll be able to thank guests directly through your registry by individually sending a personalized message and image of your gift. We’ll keep you notified of contributions and let you know exactly who to thank.
How long after the wedding should you thank guests?
It's best to thank guests within 3 months or less. Why? The longer you leave it, the more eloquently they should be written.
We think there are a few exceptions to the rule, and it all depends on your honeymoon:
- If your honeymoon is right after the wedding, you can send them 2-3 months after you return
- If your honeymoon is belated, sending them within 1 month of the wedding is ideal. Do it while it’s still fresh in guests minds.
How long is too long? 1 year is a long wait, but it's never too late. As a general rule, the later it is, the more personal the thank you card should aim to be. No matter when you send it, It’ll still make your guests day to receive a warm, heartfelt, thank you card to remind them of your special day.
